EV chargepoint grant for flats and renters: what you get

This is the grant most people mean when they say 'the home charger grant', and the two ways to lose it have nothing to do with the hardware.

What it pays
"You can get 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, up to a maximum of £500." The rate rose from £350 on 1 April 2026, and Find a grant notes that if you applied before that date your grant is worth up to £350, but you can re-apply at the £500 rate if your chargepoint has not been installed yet, telling your installer before you do. Re-applying cancels the existing application (Find a grant).
Who qualifies
- You own and live in a flat, or rent and live in any residential property, including properties under the shared ownership scheme.
- The property is in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. The Channel Islands and Isle of Man are excluded.
- The property has designated, private off-street parking that you can demonstrate a legal entitlement to use. It may be next to the property or separate from it.
- You own, lease, are assigned as a company car, are named as primary user of, or have ordered for delivery within 3 months, a vehicle on the OZEV approved list.
- One grant per person.
The two rules that sink applications
First, permission comes before the application. Find a grant: "Any third-party permissions required to install the chargepoint, such as from a landlord or freeholder or managing agent of a block of flats, must be obtained before applying for a grant." OZEV may ask to see it at any point. Second, nothing gets installed before OZEV says yes. The guidance on the 2026 changes is explicit: "Customers must not have their chargepoint installed until receiving notification from OZEV that they are eligible for a grant."
How the process runs now
Applications moved to a new platform on 1 April 2026 for both the flats and renters grant and the residential landlord grant. You apply, OZEV assesses (initially estimated at up to 10 working days), you and your installer are notified, and the installer claims through a digital form. There is no portal for installers to check claim status, so claim notifications arrive by email and the installer has to track them. Installer claims must now include four photographs: a close-up of the chargepoint, one showing model and serial number, one showing the chargepoint and the parking space, and a wide view of the building or space (gov.uk).
